The Hybridizer's Work

The first flower welcoming the visitor. Now you start thinking of who gets crossed with who?

A stripped flower that has been selectively pollinated and carefully tagged.

Seedlings grown through the winter under artificial lighting. Careful record keeping is crucial.

Only the best seedlings get planted outdoors in the spring, grown under shade cloth and carefully watched.

The first fall outdoors, seedlings take on good size and growth. At this point I cull the weakest ones.

After five to ten years of culling, hostas are moved into the garden for further hybridizing or registering. Only the best are kept.
